Post 13 is named for Private Arthur McCullough, Machine Gun Company, killed in action in France in 1919.

Born in Fairview, Iowa February 22, 1899,  Private McCullough was sleeping in his dug-out at Village Negre near Badonvillier, France when his company was subjected to an enemy gas attack.  He inhaled some of the fumes before he could get his mask on to protect himself, and died a few hours after arrival at the hospital.  He was initially interred at Baccarat, France in Grave No. 86, but later the remains
were returned to his home in Anamosa,
Iowa.  He is buried at Riverside Cemetery
in that city.

POST HISTORY

The American Legion Post 13 of Anamosa was chartered on May 28th, 1919, just one year after the founding of The American Legion.  The post was named after Arthur McCullough, the first fatality of World War I from Jones County. Monthly meetings were initially held in the Memorial Hall above the Anamosa City Hall from 1923 until July 1944.  In 1944, the post acquired a building on North Ford St where the monthly meetings were held until 20XX when the property was sold. Subsequent to that, Post 13 held their meetings across the street at the Anamosa Seniors Center. In 2017, the post moved to their present location at 300 Chamber Drive in Anamosa.

Community service has always been an important part of The American Legion program. The post supports local youth groups such as the Anamosa Running Raiders, Camp Courageous youth camp, and the Cub Scouts. It also supports and donates to the Iowa Veteran’s Home and the local food pantry along with donations to the local Unity Point Medical Center. The post provides Honor Guard services at veteran funerals and at the Anamosa High School Veteran’s Day ceremony among others. Post 13 also has a scholarship program for graduating high school seniors who have committed to military service.
